Emperors used seals to proclaim their decrees to their people, officials used seals to exercise their power, merchants used seals to demonstrate their credibility, landlords used seals to enclose felds, and the common people used seals to protect their small properties. Gradually seals became the representative and evidence of personal identity, and even today we are still using seals.

?？苏\(chéng)，1983年畢業(yè)于北京大學(xué)歷史系，在遼寧省博物館從事書畫保管與鑒定，1987年畢業(yè)于中國(guó)社會(huì)科學(xué)院研究生院歷史系，到中國(guó)藝術(shù)研究院美術(shù)研究所從事藝術(shù)史研究，1994年至1997年作為東京大學(xué)外國(guó)人客員研究員、日本國(guó)文部省特聘海外藝術(shù)家在日本從事研究與創(chuàng)作?，F(xiàn)為中國(guó)藝術(shù)研究院美術(shù)研究所研究員、教授。 ?？苏\(chéng)研究員多年從事中國(guó)古代色彩繪畫研究，主持了國(guó)家藝術(shù)科學(xué)“十五”規(guī)劃國(guó)家級(jí)重點(diǎn)課題《中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)色彩學(xué)》項(xiàng)目。其學(xué)術(shù)專著《色彩的中國(guó)繪畫－中國(guó)繪畫樣式與風(fēng)格歷史的展開(kāi)》獲“國(guó)家圖書獎(jiǎng)”、“全國(guó)優(yōu)秀藝術(shù)圖書一等獎(jiǎng)”、“中國(guó)藝術(shù)研究院2000至2003年度科研成果優(yōu)秀著作一等獎(jiǎng)”等。同時(shí)從事重彩畫創(chuàng)作，獲中國(guó)美術(shù)家協(xié)會(huì)與中國(guó)工筆畫學(xué)會(huì)聯(lián)合頒發(fā)的“重彩畫研究與創(chuàng)作特別成就獎(jiǎng)”。 ?？苏\(chéng)研究員撰寫的《色彩的中國(guó)繪畫－中國(guó)繪畫樣式與風(fēng)格歷史的展開(kāi)》專著是國(guó)內(nèi)外藝術(shù)史學(xué)界的第一部中國(guó)色彩繪畫通史。它以“色彩”這一全新視點(diǎn)審視中國(guó)繪畫，用“樣式與風(fēng)格”的筆法描繪出色彩中國(guó)畫“語(yǔ)言的歷史”。 它用縝密的研究，剖析了中國(guó)古代繪畫中色彩語(yǔ)匯的內(nèi)部結(jié)構(gòu)，闡明了它與水墨語(yǔ)匯的彼此消長(zhǎng)，并進(jìn)而探尋了色彩繪畫在中國(guó)文化背景中發(fā)展演進(jìn)的內(nèi)在理路。 它用作品分析與語(yǔ)義考證相結(jié)合的手法，梳理了有關(guān)色彩繪畫諸多概念的含義及流變；在“細(xì)讀原典”中，鉤沉了許多久被淹沒(méi)的繪畫史實(shí)，為中國(guó)色彩繪畫史的研究提供了豐富的資料。 它用審慎的眼光重新考察中國(guó)繪畫史，對(duì)畫史上有關(guān)“文人”、“筆墨”、“寫意”及“書法性”等成見(jiàn)，提出了明確的質(zhì)疑；它以超越畫史傳統(tǒng)認(rèn)識(shí)的膽識(shí)，重新評(píng)價(jià)了一些畫家、作品及繪畫現(xiàn)象，并提出了對(duì)整個(gè)中國(guó)古典繪畫發(fā)展史的認(rèn)識(shí)體系。 它以獨(dú)特而敏銳的思考，提起了許多具有進(jìn)一步探究?jī)r(jià)值的學(xué)術(shù)問(wèn)題，從而開(kāi)啟了中國(guó)色彩繪畫研究的未來(lái)想象空間。因此，這部學(xué)術(shù)著作，對(duì)于中國(guó)繪畫色彩問(wèn)題的研究具有十分創(chuàng)造的價(jià)值。
